Why the "best gaming CPU" is rarely the one with the most cores — and when it actually is.

CPU shopping confuses people because the chip that wins gaming benchmarks is often not the one with the highest core count or clock speed. Understanding why takes about two minutes and will save you real money.

What actually makes a CPU fast in games

Games are sensitive to how quickly a CPU can feed a few heavily-used threads — and, crucially, to memory latency. AMD's X3D chips stack extra L3 cache directly on the die (the "3D V-Cache"), so the CPU can keep more game data close at hand instead of reaching out to slower system memory. The higher your resolution, the more the GPU becomes the bottleneck and the less your CPU choice changes frame rates.
