How Much RAM You Need — and DDR5 vs DDR4 in 2026
16GB, 32GB, or 64GB? And does memory speed really change your frame rate?

Memory is the easiest component to get right once you know two numbers — how much, and how fast — and the easiest to overthink. Here is the practical version.
How much do you actually need?
- 16GB: the realistic floor for a new gaming PC. Fine today, but with a browser full of tabs and a game open you will occasionally brush the ceiling.
- 32GB: the 2026 sweet spot. It is the right amount for gaming plus everyday multitasking, and the price premium over 16GB is small. This is what we recommend for most builds.
- 64GB: for content creators, heavy virtual machines, large datasets, or local AI work. Gamers do not need it.
Tip — Always buy memory as a matched kit (e.g. 2×16GB), not two single sticks bought separately. Matched kits are tested to run together in dual channel, which is where the performance is.
Dual channel is not optional
Two sticks run in dual-channel mode, which roughly doubles memory bandwidth versus a single stick. A single 32GB stick will noticeably underperform two 16GB sticks in games. If a deal is only on a single-stick kit, keep scrolling.
DDR5 vs DDR4 — which to buy
For any new build on a modern platform (AMD AM5, Intel LGA1851), the choice is made for you: those sockets are DDR5-only. DDR4 still makes sense in exactly one situation — you are upgrading an older AM4 or LGA1700 system that already uses it, and replacing the RAM is far cheaper than replacing the CPU and motherboard too. A fast DDR4-3600 CL18 kit is a perfectly good last upgrade for an aging system.
Speed and timings: the Ryzen sweet spot
On AMD Ryzen, memory speed interacts with the chip's internal fabric, and there is a well-established sweet spot: DDR5-6000 with CL30 timings. It keeps the memory and the CPU's controller running in sync, which is why kits like the G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo and Corsair Vengeance DDR5-6000 CL30 are recommended over and over. Faster-on-paper kits (6400, 7200) can actually perform worse on Ryzen if they force the fabric out of its ideal mode. Intel is more tolerant of higher speeds, but DDR5-6000 CL30 remains a safe, strong choice on both.
EXPO vs XMP — just a profile
Memory ships at a slow default speed and reaches its rated speed only when you enable its profile in the BIOS. EXPO is AMD's name for that profile; XMP is Intel's. Many kits ship both. The takeaway: after installing RAM, enable EXPO/XMP in the BIOS or your fast kit will quietly run slow. It is a one-click setting that a lot of people forget.
What about RGB?
Lighting has zero effect on performance. If you have a windowed case and want the look, the RGB versions cost a little more; if you have a closed case or a low-profile cooler, a plain low-profile kit avoids clearance headaches entirely. Buy for fit and price, not for the glow.
